Vélez Sarsfield have made an early surge away from the relegation zone after a second consecutive victory in the Superliga and once again teenage centre-forward Maxi Romero was instrumental.

Following the 3-0 win over Tigre in the opening weekend, Atlético Tucumán were the visitors to Liniers and with eyes on their Copa Sudamericana last 16 tie next week, Vélez were able to take advantage.

The visitors had actually come closer to the opening goal but on the stroke of half time, Romero latched on to Federico Andrada’s deflected low cross to tap in his third of the season.

The powerful young forward added a second fifteen minutes from time when his initial header came back off the post and the rebound was fortuitously bundled in.

Romero is certainly making the most of the opportunity and following years of speculation linking him away from the club, European scouts will be paying attention to Vélez’s start of the season.

Atlético Tucumán’s opponents in the Copa Sudamericana, Independiente were in action against Olimpo in Bahía Blanca and after rotating heavily Ariel Holan’s side were held to a 1-1 draw.

The home side started the brighter but it was El Rojo who led after 34 minutes when Leandro Fernández reacted to a loose ball in the penalty area to steer past Adrián Gabbarini.

Independiente needed a second but after a host of missed chances and a disallowed goal, Olimpo found an equaliser. Cristian Nasuti played a long ball and the static visiting defence allowed Luis Vila to dash through on goal and beat Martin Campaña.

El Rojo pushed for a winner but couldn’t find it thanks in no small part to the heroics of Gabbarini in the Olimpo goal.

Earlier in Sarandí, Arsenal slumped to a second league defeat as Tomás Chancalay sealed an away win for Colón.

Both sides struck the woodwork during an open first half and with little between them eventually Chancalay’s first time shot midway through the second half wrapped up the points.

Vélez Sarsfield  2 – 0  Atlético Tucumán

Arsenal  0 – 1  Colón

Olimpo  1 – 1  Independiente
