After watching rivals Independiente already book their place in the Copa Sudamericana quarter finals, Racing Club had to travel to São Paulo for the first leg of their last 16 tie and thanks to Enrique Triverio second half goal return to Avellaneda with an invaluable draw.
La Academia had to ride their luck at times and during a first half in which Diego Cocca’s side looked a little off the pace, Triverio could have seen red for a studs up challenge on Gabriel and Rodriguinho headed against the crossbar before Maycon slotted in the opener.
The Brazilians could have perhaps extended their lead and were it not for an outstanding save by Juan Musso they would have done but Racing remained in touching distance.
Still looking the more dangerous, Corinthians continued to go in search of a second but it was Racing who drew blood. Lisandro López’s stinging shot was only parried by goalkeeper Cassio and Triverio was on hand to tap in a simple equaliser.
The draw and importantly the away goal could be vital for Racing but when the sides meet again in Avellaneda next week, La Academia will know there is still a great deal of work to do.
