Last Tuesday, Independiente secured a dramatic victory over Atlético Tucumán to progress to the quarter finals of the Copa Sudamericana; one week on and El Decano were able to exact revenge by dumping the Avellaneda club out of the Copa Argentina.

Ariel Holan will have cause for concern after the manner with which his side were beaten by Lanús in the Superliga at the weekend and now against Atlético Tucumán.

The one moment of quality from El Rojo in Mendoza on Tuesday brought the opening goal as Maxi Meza smartly turned in Leandro Fernández’s low cross but Independiente badly lost their way and allowed Atleti to take control.

Few could begrudge the equaliser when a flowing passing move was eventually thrashed into the net by Gonzalo Freitas.

There was still little reaction from Independiente and so with fifteen minutes remaining, Rodrigo Aliendro drilled in the winner.

For Independiente, desperately aiming to end their trophy drought and qualify for the Copa Libertadores once again, another door has closed and so Atlético Tucumán will now face Sarmiento in the last 16.
