After only seven matches in charge Gustavo Matosas has departed Estudiantes following his side’s 1-0 defeat to Nacional in La Plata.
Trailing by one goal from the first leg in Paraguay, Estudiantes knew the task ahead of them but carrying their poor league form into the tie, El Pincha rarely looked like overturning the deficit.
In need of at least a goal to force the tie beyond the 90 minutes, Estudiantes’ hopes were effectively ended shortly after the hour mark with a killer away goal for Nacional.
Mariano Andujar kept out an initial effort on his goal but could do little to stop Miguel Jacquet slamming in the rebound from close range.
Unable to find a way back Estudiantes limped out of the competition and so Nacional will face Independiente in the quarter finals. However, Gustavo Matosas ensured the drama didn’t end there by immediately announcing his resignation.
With only seven matches under his belt in La Plata, Matosas joins a group with Mauricio Pellegrino, Gabriel Milito, Lucas Nardi and Nelson Vivas who have all left as head coach under president Juan Sebastian Veron.
