After four straight defeats little was expected from Arsenal ahead of their trip to the Estadio Florencio Sola on Monday evening. Banfield had secured Copa Libertadores football last season built largely on their form at home and started this campaign in similar form so Julio Grondona’s visitors claiming three points was a shock.
Even more so after youngster Juan Álvarez gave Banfield an early lead with his first professional goal and Arsenal were reduced to ten men. Rodrigo Contreras’ two-footed challenge on Renato Civelli will be one of the worst challenges seen all year and the striker was rightly shown a straight red card.
A goal down, down to ten men and denied a decent penalty claim for handball, a fifth defeat for Arsenal looked certain.
However, Banfield, so often the side playing on the backfoot and breaking, looked at odds with being forced into a new role and Arsenal took advantage. Federico Milo headed an equaliser in the 65th minute and as the home side lost control, Arsenal snatch victory. A swift counter from a Banfield corner resulted in German Ferreyra slotting in the winner three minutes from time.
Arsenal remain in the relegation zone but are up and running and will be boosted by their performance while Banfield will rue the missed opportunity to go second.
Later in Rosario, Newell’s and Godoy Cruz ended all square after a pretty uneventful clash in the Estadio Marcelo Bielsa.
Even after the home side had Braian Rivero sent off for a second yellow card on the hour mark, Godoy Cruz were unable to force a winner.
Banfield 1 – 2 Arsenal
Newell’s Old Boys 0 – 0 Godoy Cruz
