Champions three years ago, Huracán’s decline since then has been steep but aside from battling relegation in the Superliga, El Globo still had hopes of a run in this year’s Copa Argentina. Gustavo Alfaro’s side may well wonder how they aren’t still in the draw but the answer is a their own wastefulness and an inspired performance by Vélez goalkeeper César Rigamonti.
Both sides had clear chances in their last 16 clash in La Paternal but on every occasion when a goal looked certain either Rigamonti or his opposite number Marcos Díaz stood in the way.
Rigamonti was perhaps fortunate not to see red when he handled outside his penalty area and prevented a certain goal for Ramón Ábila but Huracán still had chances to win it.
A penalty moments later handed El Globo the clearest opportunity but after Ábila and Alejandro Romero Gamarra bickered over who should take it, Rigamonti guessed correctly to keep out the youngster’s effort.
Having already saved one in normal time, the tie went to penalties and Rigamonti still denied Huracán. Wanchope missed the target before the Vélez keeper saved two more, allowing Omar de Felippe’s side, who were perfect from the spot, to progress.
Atlético Tucumán are up next in the quarter finals.
