The lineup for the Copa Argentina semi final was completed on Tuesday evening and while Vélez Sarsfield might be wondering how they are not there, Atlético Tucumán celebrate reaching the last four after a 1-0 win in Santa Fe.
Despite struggling in a relegation battle in the league, Vélez created more than enough chances to progress but on every occasion Omar de Felippe’s side found goalkeeper Cristian Lucchetti in their way.
The Atlético captain repeatedly denied Vélez and even when a penalty was awarded, Vélez couldn’t capitalise. Matias Vargas firing wide to let El Decano off the hook.
However, Vélez’s luck didn’t stop there as defender Yonathan Cabral was shown a second yellow card, reducing Atlético to ten. But despite this advantage, El Fortin fell behind when Favio Alvarez skipped inside a challenge and clipped the ball over César Rigamonti.
Atlético Tucumán held on for the win and will now face Rosario Central for a place in the Copa Argentina final. Not only is the opportunity to lift the trophy still there but with River already confirmed in the Copa Libertadores 2018, either Atleti, Central or Deportivo Morón will also book a place.
