A fourth straight defeat, one win in eight and one solitary goal in that time — results do not make easy reading for Vélez Sarsfield supporters. Thursday’s loss against Godoy Cruz nudges the struggling giant a little closer to the relegation zone ahead of Monday’s critical Superliga clash with Olimpo.
Godoy Cruz were yet to win on their travels and so there was some room for optimism within the Vélez camp despite their wretched form.
However, the early season goals of young centre forward Maxi Romero have dried up and with it Vélez are toothless. Romero and strike partner Federico Andrada were both guilty of wasting chances and Matías Vargas bent a free kick inches wide but the home side couldn’t end their drought in front of goal.
There had been chances at the other end, most notably for Gastón Giménez, who couldn’t direct a header on target with the goal gaping, but eventually the breakthrough came.
Juan Garro broke down the left and his cross to the back post was decisively met by the forehead of Victorio Ramis.
Vélez’s attempts to force an equaliser never came that close and so Marcelo Gómez’s side slipped to defeat. Olimpo visit the Estadio José Amalfitani on Monday and with the side from Bahía Blanca occupying the place directly below Vélez, the three points available couldn’t be more important.
