The first half of the Superliga season has drawn to a close before the Argentinian summer gets too unbearably hot and Boca Juniors ensured that they remain out in front after 365 days at the top of the table.
The champions slight blip has been put behind them and Wilmar Barrios’ goal was enough for victory over Gimnasia on Sunday. San Lorenzo’s victory the week earlier means the gap is only three points and Independiente look the next most likely challenger after Ariel Holan’s young side saw off Arsenal thanks to an Ezequiel Denis winner. El Rojo’s game in hand could make them contenders in 2018 but this week’s Copa Sudamericana final remains the number one priority.
This weekend’s big game came in Rosario, where Central celebrated a derby victory over Newell’s to end the year on a high, as did Racing Club, who came from behind to defeat Gimnasia. Re-elected president Victor Blanco now must choose a new manager and prepare for a better 2018.
And in the relegation battle, Chacarita Juniors were given a glimmer of hope by beating Lanús, Temperley picked up another three points, Patronato defeated rivals Olimpo and Argentinos Juniors eased concerns with a win over Banfield.
