Roma looked to heading for a frustrating goalless draw against Cagliari on Saturday afternoon until Federico Fazio bundled in a scrappy 94th minute winner in the Stadio Olimpico. The hosts had missed a string of chances, none clearer than Diego Perotti’s weak second half penalty, but eventually the pressure paid off with Fazio getting on the end of Alexander Kolarov’s free kick.
Roma remain in fourth but Fazio continues to stake a claim for his place in Jorge Sampaoli’s World Cup squad.
Inter Milan’s unbeaten start to the season finally came to an end and with it their lead at the top of Serie A after defeat to Udinese in the San Siro.
Kevin Lasagna tapped in from close range to give the visitors the lead but Inter were immediately back level when Mauro Icardi volleyed his 17th goal of the season.
The turning point proved to a VAR-awarded penalty on the hour mark that former Racing Club youngster Rodrigo de Paul tucked away confidently and as Inter searched for another equaliser, Antonín Barák sealed the victory for Udinese.
And in the Club World Cup, Mexican club Pachuca recovered from the disappointment of their narrow defeat to Grêmio to cruise to victory in the third-place playoff against Al-Jazira. Shortly after the UAE club had equalised, former Arsenal forward Franco Jara slotted in to restore the lead and Pachuca eventually completed a 4-1 win.
