Had Newell’s Old Boys taken their chances during a first half of superiority, penalties wouldn’t have been needed to settle their preseason clash with Banfield but as it was Brian Sarmiento settled it from the spot against his former club.
Newell’s led in Santa Fe after only three minutes when Luis Leal headed in José San Román’s right wing cross and amid a number of other chances in the first 45 minutes, San Román crashed a long range effort against the crossbar.
Banfield were improved after the break and a powerful Darío Cvitanich header levelled the match. El Taladro should arguably have sealed the win when Nicolás Bertolo wasted a glorious opportunity with a needlessly complicated attempt to chip Nelson Ibáñez.
With the friendly forced to penalties, Juan Alvarez’s saved effort meant Brian Sarmiento could seal a 4-3 win.
