Independiente missed the chance to go third and close the gap on league leaders Boca Juniors after being held to a 1-1 draw by Tigre in Victoria.
Tigre, so desperately unlucky to lose to a last-second goal away to Boca last weekend, were good value for their point after causing Ariel Holan’s rotated starting eleven all manner of problems throughout the 90 minutes.
Independiente without captain Martín Campaña, Gastón Silva, Maxi Meza and Fabricio Bustos due to their international commitments and Martín Benítez because of injury were well short of their usual level and should have been behind when Federico González almost capitalised on some poor defending to hit the post.
González fired wide again before it was Independiente who broke the deadlock. Fernando Gaibor produced a superb pass to release Silvio Romero and the former Lanús striker made no mistake in burying his first since joining El Rojo.
Tigre remained the more dangerous side and after wasting a couple more clear chances, González did find the net, slotting past Damián Albil after a fine passing move.
Carlos Luna and Silvio Romero fluffed glorious chances to win it at either end in the closing minutes but neither could find the net.
The result leaves Independiente in fifth, level with fourth-placed San Lorenzo, who El Rojo still need to play in the pair’s game-in-hand over the three teams above.
Tigre 1 – 1 Independiente
Earlier on Monday evening, Unión recorded back-to-back Superliga wins for the first time since November with a 2-0 victory over Banfield at the Estadio Florencio Sola.
Banfield had their chances particularly during the second half where they threatened from set-pieces but first half goals from Mauro Pittón and Franco Fragapane handed Unión the points. Pittón’s deflected volley and Fragapane’s unmarked finish exposed the home side’s difficulty with tracking runs from deep and while Unión needed a bit of luck at times to keep a clean sheet, El Tatengue were good value for the win.
Unión are still only a few points off a Copa Libertadores spot despite a poor run of form and at least can focus on securing a 2019 Copa Sudamericana place.
