Sergio Agüero undergoes knee surgery & could miss rest of season but be fit for World Cup

Argentina could be heading into another major tournament with question marks over the fitness of first choice striker Sergio Agüero after the Manchester City star underwent keyhole surgery on his knee.

Agüero missed the win over Tottenham at the weekend after struggling with the injury for some weeks but with City wrapping up the Premier League title, the 29-year-old has now had minor surgery.

“Recovering from an arthroscopy on my knee. Fully motivated to get back soon to the field,” Agüero wrote on Twitter on Tuesday.

It is understood that Agüero will be out for around four weeks and may not play again for City this season but should be back in good time to join up with the Argentina squad ahead of the final World Cup warm-up friendlies.

Suffering the injury back in March, Agüero hasn’t started a game since the win over Chelsea on March 4th and since then has made two substitute appearances in the defeats to Manchester United and Liverpool.

It is understood that a tackle by Ashley Young in that Manchester derby defeat aggravated the existing injury which Agüero was attempting to play through.

Pep Guardiola stated before the weekend win over Spurs that he wasn’t sure when Agüero would be fit and while the Spaniard cast doubt over whether the club record scorer would be available for any of the final five games of the season, he confirmed that Agüero would be ready for the World Cup.

Argentina will certainly hope so. Agüero is clearly Jorge Sampaoli’s first choice as number nine but injury has restricted the amount of time that the relatively new Argentina manager has been able to field him.

After such a dramatic qualification period, final preparation will be key ahead of flying to Russia and Agüero will need to be fit to make the most of it.

La Albiceleste have suffered in the past with a clearly unfit Agüero in the squad unable to produce anything near the level he is capable of and a repeat in Russia would obviously limit the options available to Sampaoli.
