Lucas Bernardi is under increasing pressure in La Plata after his out of form Estudiantes side slipped to defeat against Santos leaving El Pincha in a precarious position in Group F of this year’s Copa Libertadores.
Two goals either side of half time gave Santos victory and put the Brazilians firmly in control of the group having already secured at least a Copa Sudamericana spot. However, with Real Garcilaso and Nacional still to play their game in-hand, Estudiantes look to be heading to Peru in next week in need of a result.
A fairly even first half was tipped in favour of the home side just before the break when Gabriel Barboza ran clear to slot the ball past Mariano Andújar and what Estudiantes had to ensure is that they didn’t fall further behind after the break.
But just four minutes after the restart a free kick into the penalty area found Lucas Veríssimo and the defender’s unchallenged, glancing header beat Andújar.
Estudiantes pushed forward but rarely looked like salvaging anything from the game and now face an uphill task to progress. Santos have already lost in Cusco to show how tough going away to Real Garcilaso will be and in the final round, Nacional will likely be coming to La Plata in need of a result themselves.
With just one win in six in the Superliga too, Lucas Bernardi is in need of results to turn things around.
