Defeat to Colón on the final day of the Superliga season had seen Racing Club miss out on one route into the 2019 Copa Libertadores and while that result came as a shock, none could have predicted Torneo Federal A club Sarmiento de Resistencia closing another door with a stunning Copa Argentina upset.
The Copa Argentina provides another path to qualification and for that reason has become a desirable competition for the Superliga’s big clubs — Racing’s team selection, including Ricardo Centurión and Lautaro Martínez was proof of that but didn’t stop the minnows from Chaco.
Eduardo Coudet’s side, so impressive during 2018, were well below-par and 20 minutes from time Horacio Orzán’s superb first-time shot whistled past goalkeeper Javier García.
Racing pushed forward in search of an equaliser that would at least force penalties but Martínez didn’t have his usually so deadly shooting boots on and Sarmiento held on.
The Federal A club will play Unión in the next round after El Tatengue defeated Juventud Unida in Paraná.
A Rodrigo Gómez penalty gave the Superliga club the lead and Franco Soldano wrapped it up shortly after the hour mark with a powerful header.
