The World Cup may have just ended and the Superliga season still more than three weeks away but the Copa Argentina got back up and running this week and San Lorenzo booked their place in the last 32 with a narrow win over Torneo Federal A side Racing de Córdoba.
So early in preseason and without Fernando Belluschi or Nicolás Blandi, San Lorenzo were far from impressive but avoided what was a potential banana skin at this stage to set up a clash with either Colón or Deportivo Morón in the next round.
The only goal came just after the hour mark when recent signing Pablo Mouche swung over a free-kick and when goalkeeper Leonardo Rodríguez failed to claim, Paulo Díaz headed in at the back post.
The lower league side responded well and had a strong claim for a penalty when the ball clearly struck Víctor Salazar’s arm. However, referee Fernando Echenique waved it away and San Lorenzo survived.
Nicolás Reneiro missed a glorious opportunity from a few yards out to wrap up the win but San Lorenzo held on for an important victory.
Earlier, Luján defeated Agropecuario Argentino and over the next two weeks the entire round will be played to complete the line-up for the last 32.
