There are no shortage of potential surprise packages in this year’s Copa Argentina but Torneo Federal A club Central Córdoba de Santiago del Estero are the first into the last 16 after victory over Tigre in Santa Fe.
The penalty win over Vélez in the previous round had already given supporters reason to celebrate and that feeling doesn’t look like stopping yet as a last 16 clash against giants Independiente or Brown de Adrogúe looms.
Tigre will begin the upcoming Superliga season in the thick of the relegation battle but were still firm favourites against lower league opposition.
Maxi Caire came close to giving the top flight club a first half lead but even after the introduction of debutant Diego Vera, Tigre couldn’t find a way through.
Eventually in the 74th minute it was Central Córdoba who broke the deadlock. Pablo Ortega’s shot from outside the box catching goalkeeper Julio Chiarini flat footed.
Tigre needed a goal to force penalties but in the closing stage Diego Jara burst down the left past two defenders before squaring for Alfredo Ramírez to wrap up victory.
