For Torneo Federal A club Sarmiento de Resistencia their moment of Copa Argentina glory looked to have already reached its peak when they knocked out Racing Club back in May but the lower league minnows dream continues after another against the odds victory over Unión took Sarmiento to the last 16.
Franco Fragapane tapping in the opening goal inside three minutes suggested Superliga club Unión wouldn’t go the same way of Racing and with the luck on their side that saw a valid Sarmiento equaliser ruled out for offside that looked even more to be the case.
The third tier club continued to pose a threat and even after having Angel Piz sent off for a rash challenge on Diego Zabala after 72 minutes, Sarmiento never gave up.
Nelson Acevedo’s high boot earned the Unión enforcer a second yellow to level up the sides ten minutes from time and almost immediately afterwards Sarmiento equalised, Ronald Huth beating goalkeeper Marcos Peano to a free kick into the box.
Before Unión could come to terms with surrendering the lead, Leonardo Madelón’s side were behind when a simple long ball was flicked in behind and Luis Silba thumped a volley past a badly positioned Peano.
The Superliga side almost snatched a late equaliser but Sarmiento held on and will now face Atlético de Rafaela in the last 16 with a potential quarter final against River Plate on the horizon.
Unión 1 – 2 Sarmiento de Resistencia
A little earlier and Temperley became the second side to book a place in the quarter finals after defeating a lacklustre Argentinos Juniors in Neuquén.
Los Bichos will be bitterly disappointed not to be in the next round after coming up against a side who were relegated from the top flight last season but Alfredo Berti’s side were well below the standard of the side that so easily avoided the drop themselves.
Leandro González volleyed Temperley ahead after 17 minutes and when Lucas Delgado doubled the lead 20 minutes from time, there was no way back for Argentinos.
Temperley now await the winners of Estudiantes and San Lorenzo in the quarter final.
