The Copa Argentina quarter final line up is complete and there is no doubting what the tie of the round is after Rosario Central overcame Almagro to set up a colossal Clásico Rosarino in the next round.
Fierce rivals Newell’s Old Boys had booked their place one month ago but on Wednesday evening in Santa Fe, Central joined them after a penalty shootout victory against B Nacional club Almagro.
Germán Herrera stabbed Central in front after half an hour but the Superliga club’s lead lasted only some minutes as Miguel Barbieri was adjudged to have blocked Leonardo Acosta’s shot with an arm and it allowed the Almagro striker to equalise from the spot.
That goal sent the tie to a shootout as neither side could find a winner within 90 minutes. Fernando Zampedri missed the first chance to win it for Central but when it went into sudden death and Nahuel Basualdo missed for Almagro, Matías Caruzzo was able to smash in the winner.
The cup organisers and security officials now have the headache of organising what will be a red hot clásico and the build-up for that begins now.
Rosario Central 1 – 1 Almagro (Pens 5-4)
Earlier in Mendoza, San Lorenzo sealed their place in the quarter finals with a 3-1 victory over Estudiantes.
Pablo Mouche gave El Ciclón the lead from the penalty spot just before half time but a Facundo Sánchez header shortly after the break, levelled it up.
It looked as though another Copa Argentina tie might be heading for penalties but San Lorenzo welcomed Fernando Belluschi back from a lengthy injury layoff and the veteran playmaker slipped in Nicolás Reniero to fire in a second.
Two minutes later Adolfo Gaich added a third and with it wrapped up the win. San Lorenzo will now play Temperley for a place in the semi final.
And on Tuesday evening, Torneo Federal A side Sarmiento de Resistencia continued their remarkable run with victory over Atlético de Rafaela to claim the prize of a quarter final clash against River Plate. Goals at the end of either half by Luis Silba and Maxi Gauto González were enough but there are now some questions over the next round. Organisers have scheduled the match with River swiftly for Sunday and Sarmiento, in the middle of a promotion chase, are less than keen on the idea.
