Estudiantes’ trip to Santa Fe to play Colón avoided the climatic problems that claimed the Copa Libertadores final in Buenos Aires and a fine Gastón Fernández strike ensured El Pincha returned to La Plata with a point.
Colón had been much the better side during the opening 45 minutes and only a couple of solid stops by Mariano Andújar denied the home side from taking an earlier lead. However, the veteran goalkeeper had a direct hand in the goal that did eventually see Colón go ahead, rushing off his line to trip Leonardo Heredia and allowing Javier Correa to break the deadlock from the penalty spot.
Estudiantes improved after the break and on the hour mark drew level. While Gastón Fernández’s winner against River Plate last week owed more to a deflection than anything else, the 35-year-old’s equaliser in Santa Fe was down to power and precision.
Neither side really did enough to find a winner and a share of the points was probably fair leaving both in mid table.
