Last week’s 4-0 win in Sarandí had somewhat eased nerves surrounding Argentina’s trip to Panama for their World Cup qualification playoff second leg and with a 1-1 draw on Tuesday the Albiceleste finished the job booking a place at the 2019 Women’s World Cup.

It has been 12 years since Argentina last went to the tournament but the comfort of that first leg victory ensured that ultimately an emphatic qualification was sealed in Panama City.

Natalia Mills did pull a goal back shortly before half time in the second leg but Florencia Bonsegundo’s mishit cross snatching an equaliser and away goal midway through the second half ended any slim hopes of a comeback.

A late red card given to Yamila Rodriguez made no difference and Argentina held on for a famous victory that sends them to France in June.

The remaining few spots for the World Cup will be decided in the coming weeks and while Argentina will not be among the favourites, the Albiceleste are among the 24 nations competing for the greatest prize.
