Just days after Juan Fernando Quintero’s free-kick against Racing Club went viral, the Colombian wizard was at it again with another audacious strike only this time it wasn’t enough to give River Plate victory. An enthralling encounter against Rosario Central ended 1-1 in a game that could have easily produced six or seven goals.
Quintero kicked things off with a goal that highlights not only the ability in his left foot but the confidence the 26-year-old has under Marcelo Gallardo. From an angle so acute that almost any other player would think only of crossing, Quintero whipped a shot inside the near post that caught Jeremías Ledesma by complete surprise.
River should arguably have extended that lead with Rafael Santoss Borre wasting a good chance and Lucas Pratto bending one against the crossbar.
However, unable to take advantage, Central grew in confidence. Moments after the break an uncharacteristic Franco Armani error allowed Agustín Allione’s shot to squirm underneath him and from that point the two sides traded blows.
Matías Suárez and Washington Camacho both hitting the woodwork at either end as both sides came close to snatching the points.
The summer break appears to have done Central some good and while River missed out on the chance to go fifth, Los Millonarios have turned things around and have their eyes firmly on Copa Libertadores qualification.
