Defensa y Justicia will hope to close back to within three points on Monday evening but for now Racing Club sit six clear at the top of the Superliga after victory over Estudiantes on Sunday. It wasn’t particularly impressive from La Academia but Darío Cvitanich’s first half goal was enough to secure victory and edge Racing closer to the title.
While that remains in the balance until El Halcón respond, Racing’s win did book a spot in the 2020 Copa Libertadores and River Plate moved to within three points of the top four with victory against Newell’s Old Boys. Two headers by Lucas Martínez Quarta and Matías Suárez had given River a commanding early lead and after Alexis Rodríguez halved the deficit, impressive youngster Cristian Ferreira curled in a free kick to restore the advantage. Ignacio Scocco scored a fourth from the penalty spot against his former club before Luis Leal added a late consolation for Newell’s.
Independiente’s poor form continued with a 1-0 defeat away to Gimnasia on Sunday thanks to Lorenzo Faravelli’s well taken strike and as El Lobo eased their relegation fears with a win, Patronato climbed out of the drop zone with a win over Huracán. Federico Bravo’s second half header was enough to secure the vital points that hauled Patronato clear of San Martín de San Juan and Belgrano, both held to goalless draws by Godoy Cruz and Rosario Central respectively.
San Martín de Tucumán hired Caruso Lombardi this week to try and pull off a miraculous relegation escape but the club suffered an early set back with defeat to Lanús. The in-form Granate earned a 2-1 win thanks to goals from José Sand and Lautaro Acosta.
And finally, Talleres responded to their disappointing Copa Libertadores exit with victory against Colón. Juan Komar and Dayro Moreno goals either side of half time produced a 2-0 win that pushed La T firmly into the Copa Sudamericana spots.
