Copa Libertadores: Boca Juniors prove too much for Tolima & Godoy Cruz earn point in Peru (VIDEO)

After last week’s goalless draw in Bolivia, Boca Juniors kickstarted their Copa Libertadores campaign on Tuesday evening with what was eventually a comfortable 3-0 win over Deportes Tolima at La Bombonera.

A lacklustre first half had seen the Colombians threaten and come close to an opener but a vastly improved display after the break saw Boca run away with the points. The influential Mauro Zárate’s inswinging free-kick flicked off forward Marco Pérez’s head to break the deadlock just after the restart and soon after Darío Benedetto nodded Boca two in front.

Three minutes later the move of the game produced the pick of the bunch as Sebastián Villa combined with Carlos Tevez, who slipped in Zárate to slot in a superbly worked goal.

Victory puts Boca top of Group G with four points though Athletico Paranaense and Jorge Wilstermann meet on Thursday in their second game.

A little later in Lima, Godoy Cruz were hoping to build on last week’s goalless draw with Olimpia against Sporting Cristal but once more had to settle for a point.

Argentine striker Emanuel Herrera had slotted the Peruvians ahead very early though the lead didn’t last long, Tomás Cardona eventually firing into the net as the ball bounced around the Sporting penalty area.

Neither side could find a winner and the result leaves Group C wide open. El Tomba’s trip to Chile to play Universidad de Concepción in a couple of weeks would be an ideal time for Godoy Cruz to get their first win in the competition.
