Carlos Quintana’s last gasp winner in La Paternal last week proved enough for Argentinos Juniors to book a place in the Copa Sudamericana last 16 after Los Bichos held Deportes Tolima to a goalless draw on Thursday evening.
The Colombians who had dropped out of the Copa Libertadores group stage failed to breakdown a resolute Argentinos side and for all of their possession could not muster even a single shot on target over the 90 minutes.
It was instead Argentinos who perhaps came closest with Gabriel Hauche missing the target from a close range header and the influential Alexis Mac Allister twice coming within a whisker with shots from the edge of the box.
A red card apiece for both teams in stoppage time as Argentinos lost Elías Gómez and the home side had Rafael Carrascal sent off had no impact and couldn’t dampen the visitors celebrations as they held out for the required draw.
Argentinos Juniors will play compatriots Colón in the last 16 in the half of the Copa Sudamericana draw which has really opened up and could see a run deep into the competition for one of the two.
