Neither Godoy Cruz nor Huracán have obviously been practising penalties during preseason as El Tomba sealed a place in the Copa Argentina last 16 on Sunday with a 2-1 shootout victory.
After playing out a 1-1 draw in Córdoba, the tie went to the spot and with Huracán only finding the net once from their five efforts, it meant Godoy Cruz’s 50% success rate was enough to set up a next round clash with either River Plate or Nacional B side Gimnasia y Esgrima de Mendoza.
Young defender Joaquín Varela has scrambled Godoy Cruz in front during the first half only for a defensive lapse in stoppage time at the other end to allow the unmarked Saúl Salcedo to draw Huracán level.
El Globo had the better of it enjoying greater possession and creating the more chances but with neither side able to find a second it went to penalties.
Godoy Cruz goalkeeper Andrés Mehring saving from Lucas Gamba from the first spotkick set the tone and it meant Santiago García and Tomás Cardona scoring for El Tomba was decisive. Andrés Chávez blazing over and Mehring saving from Saúl Salcedo and Lorenzo Faravelli settled it and so as the first team in the last 16, Godoy Cruz watch Tuesday evening’s River Plate-Gimnasia y Esgrima de Mendoza tie with interest.
