Copa Argentina: Racing shocked by third-tier Boca Unidos (VIDEO)

Racing Club begin their Superliga defence this week but were knocked out of the Copa Argentina on Sunday evening by Torneo Federal A club Boca Unidos.

Despite dominating play in what was a stormy Lanús, La Academia couldn’t find a way past a resolute Boca Unidos side.

Dario Cvitanich saw a first half shot scrambled off the line but in truth for all of Racing’s possession, the Superliga champions failed to really work goalkeeper José Aquino.

Eventually forcing a shootout it was the lower league side that prevailed. Gabriel Arias had twice saved Racing by denying Boca Unidos in the penalty directly after a miss but on the third occasion when Marcelo Diaz blazed over in sudden death it was left to Fernando Alloco to slot in the winner.

Having been knocked out of the Copa Sudamericana earlier in the year, Racing will be focused solely on their Superliga defence for the rest of 2019 while Boca Unidos go on to face Atlético Tucumán in the last 16.
