On the day that the Panama men’s team appointed Argentine 1978 World Cup winner América Gallego as manager, the women’s team suffered defeat at the hands of Argentina with Carlos Borrello’s side securing a 1-0 win that ensures a place in the Panamerican Games semi-final.
It was victory against Panama back in November 2018 that sent Argentina to the World Cup for the first time in 12 years and after the hugely positive experience in France, Las Pibas travelled to Lima with a renewed confidence and self-belief.
That may have taken a knock with the fall out between captain Estefanía Banini and coach Carlos Borrello in the build-up to this tournament but it doesn’t appear to have adversely affected things on the pitch as Argentina followed up the win over hosts Peru with victory against Panama.
A wonderful Mariana Larroquette free-kick was enough for the win and it means that ahead of Saturday’s final group game with Costa Rica both sides have progression confirmed.
All that is left to decide is who takes top spot in Group B ahead of the semi finals next Tuesday.
