Copa Argentina: Independiente & Colón cruise through while Arsenal are shocked (VIDEO)

The last 16 line up for this year’s Copa Argentina is almost complete and although Independiente and Colón booked their places in the next round there was still room for another cup upset as Arsenal de Sarandí suffered defeat to Primera Nacional side Estudiantes de Buenos Aires.

Independiente produced their best performance under Sebastián Beccacece to pick up a second league win of the season at the weekend and El Rojo deservedly progressed past Patronato in San Luis. Domingo Blanco slotting in the only goal during the second half latching on to a threaded Juan Sánchez Miño pass.

Sebastián Palacios should have doubled the lead when blazing over from just yards out but it was a comfortable enough victory for Independiente and Defensa y Justicia now lie ahead in the last 16.

Colón, who suffered defeat to Independiente at the weekend, made even lighter work of Federal A club Sol de Mayo in Rafaela.

Youngster Santiago Pierotti drilled in the opening goal from outside the box after only four minutes and when Nicolás Leguizamón crossed for Mauro Da Luz to bundle in a second quarter of an hour later the tie was effectively over.

Leguizamón made it three before the break and Tomás Chancalay added a superb fourth ten minutes from time to secure the win and set up a last 16 tie against either Atlético Tucumán or Boca Unidos.

It was less good news for Arsenal, who despite their excellent start to the Superliga season, were on the end of a 3-2 defeat to Estudiantes de Buenos Aires.

A quick start from the Primera Nacional side saw them race into a three-goal lead inside the opening half hour. Paolo Impini heading in the first, Hugo Silva doubling the lead with a well-struck volley and Lucas Campana pouncing on some woeful defending to tap in a third.

Juan Manuel García;s diving header pulled one back before the break to give Arsenal hope of a comeback but unable to find a second until Ezequiel Cérica’s fine snapshot in stoppage time meant Estudiantes held on.

With Vélez already eliminated in that part of the bracket the side with that particular scalp, Real Pilar are up next for Estudiantes.

Independiente  1 – 0  Patronato

Colón  4 – 0  Sol de Mayo

Arsenal  2 – 3  Estudiantes de Buenos Aires
