Vélez Sarsfield may regret missing the chance to take a firm grip on the top four after bottom of the Superliga Godoy Cruz left Liniers with three points on Wednesday evening.

Juan Brunetta’s seventh-minute penalty left plenty of time for Gabriel Heinze’s side to turn things round but once again their wastefulness in front of goal proved costly.

Maxi Romero and Ricardo Centurión both hit the woodwork during a second half onslaught but Vélez were unable to find even an equaliser.

The result leaves Vélez in third but level on points with four sides beneath them on goal difference as the Copa Superliga will determine who can secure 2021 Copa Liberadores spots.
