Kily González got off to a winning start as Rosario Central manager as Lucas Gamba’s wonderful goal five minutes from time clinched victory over Godoy Cruz.
It was the visitors who could have scored first with Martín Ojeda running clear in the opening minutes but instead his namesake, academy product Pedro Ojeda fired Central into an early lead. Joel López Pissano’s corner swept in by Ojeda, a combination between two players that Kily knows well from his time working with the reserves.
Another of those young players, Luciano Ferreyra came within inches of adding a second shortly after half time with a wonderful bending shot that came back off the inside of the post.
And those fine margins swiftly came back to haunt Central as Hugo Silva arrived at the back post to sneak a shot past Josué Ayala.
It could have been worse for the home side with Ayala forced into a smart reaction stop to deny Tomás Badaloni and Santiago García missing the target with the goal gaping.
With both sides pushing for a winner Lucas Gamba stepped up in spectacular fashion. Emiliano Vecchio slipped in Gamba on the counter and the 33-year-old blasted into the top corner from the edge of the box.
Central take the early initiative in Group 3 with River Plate and Banfield set to play their rescheduled game on Tuesday.
