Copa Sudamericana: Lanús & Independiente set up quarter-final clash with big wins (VIDEO)

Independiente all but finished their job last week with a 4-1 first leg win over Fénix in Montevideo and while Lanús had lost in La Paz a 6-2 demolition of Bolívar back at La Fortaleza on Wednesday set up an all-Argentine Copa Sudamericana quarter-final.

Last week’s 2-1 defeat at altitude at least had the all important away goal but Lanús saw that cancelled out within minutes on home soil as veteran Marcos Riquelme outmuscled Matías Pérez to put Bolívar two ahead on aggregate.

It proved to be only a blip for Lanús. 18-year-old Franco Orozco bundled an equaliser and the impressive Tomás Belmonte rifled in a second before the break to level things up.

The creaking Bolivian defence looked likely to concede at every attack and Belmonte poked Lanús further in front just after the restart. Another corner and more absent marking would allow Orozco to head in his second and shortly after the hour mark Lautaro Acosta made it five on the night.

Though Lanús are capable of their own haphazard defending and Álvaro Rey pulled a goal back for the Bolivians during a brief period where the visitors forced Lautaro Morales into action. The resistance was swiftly put to an end when Nicolás Orsini breezed through to blast in Lanús’ sixth and with it book a comfortable quarter-final spot.

Independiente lie in wait after cruising past Fénix with a resounding 5-1 aggregate victory.

With the tie virtually put to bed and a place in the next round of the Copa Diego Maradona already confirmed, Independiente may not have been playing particularly well but are now unbeaten in eleven under Lucas Pusineri.

That being said there have been flashes of neat football and midway through the first half a terrific passing move released Silvio Romero to open the scoring on the night.

A red card just before half time to Fernando Souza made Fénix’s evening even more miserable and while Independiente dominated in second gear they were unable to add further goals.

While performances may not have always been encouraging Pusineri’s side continue to grind out results. An injury concern to Romero who felt some discomfort after the game is a worry for Independiente ahead of their captain’s return to Lanús.
