It may only have been a second win of the season for San Lorenzo but it could be a significant one for Diego Dabove. El Ciclón defeated Estudiantes 2-0 in La Plata and will hope that they have no turned a corner under their new manager.

Nicolás Fernández tapping in Franco Di Santo’s low cross gave San Lorenzo the perfect start. Estudiantes, who were looking to go second in Group A applied plenty of pressure but were unable to find an equaliser before Juan Ramírez slotted in a 68th minute second.

The result leaves San Lorenzo still in tenth but now looking upwards while Estudiantes’ defeat only sees Colón even further clear at the top.

In the bottom half of Group B, Newell’s Old Boys were still unable to chalk up a first win of the season but did come from behind to salvage a draw against Atlético Tucumán.

Germán Burgos’ defensive approach saw Newell’s take a first half lead somewhat against the run of play, Franco Negri’s deflected long range effort wrong footing Cristian Lucchetti.

Atlético responded well after the break and once Augusto Lotti slotted them level it looked likely the home team would take the points. Twice the Newell’s crossbar was rattled before former Leper Guillermo Ortíz headed Atlético in front.

However, unable to hold on Cristian Lema swivelled in a crowded six-yard box to fire a late equaliser. Not pretty and scarcely deserved but Newell’s avoided defeat and now Burgos needs a win.

Elsewhere in Group B, Huracán and Gimnasia remain outside the top four after a draw in Parque Patricios.

In Frank Kudelka’s first game in charge Huracán led shortly before half time when Lucas Merolla headed in at a corner. A well worked Gimnasia equaliser came soon after the restart, Braian Alemán finishing with ease after fine work from Johan Carbonero and although Merolla thought he had scored a winner his late header was ruled out for a foul on Marcelo Weigandt.
