History

One of the most successful club’s in Argentina, Estudiantes La Plata were born out of rivals Gimnasia deciding not to play football back in 1905. Gimnasia deemed football to be a lower class pursuit and so in protest a group of students broke away and formed the aptly titled, Estudiantes.
Since then Estudiantes have claimed 5 league titles, the first side outside the ‘big 5’ to do so, and an impressive 4 Copa Libertadores titles. Between 1968 and 1979 Estudiantes won 3 Libertadores championships back-to-back and most recently won it again in 2009 led by club legend, Juan Sebastian Veron.
