With a spectacular crowd of around 35,000 people and more importantly more than 5 millon pesos made from ticket sales Boca and River played out a typically aggressive and intense match.
Boca versus River is always an event regardless of the reason for the game such is the rivalry between these 2 clubs. Not many clubs in the world when playing a series of three games organized to promote tourism in Argentina and so played in three different cities could still create such passion.
The first of these three scheduled games was played in Mar del Plata last night and was won by River thanks to the contribution of Uruguayan forward Rodrigo Mora who scored both goals for “los Millonarios”.The first half was an intense affair with both teams starting aggressively and looking to get a grip of the game. The first real opportunity of the game fell to Boca but was wasted by Santiago Silva who could not beat River goalkeeper Marcelo Barovero. River started hesitantly but got better as time went on with new signing Leonel Vangioni causing problems down the left. The closest River came to opening the scoring in this period were from range with shots from Johnatan Botinelli and Rogelio Funes Mori but both were thwarted by Boca keeper Agustin Orion.
The second half was dominated by River with Vangioni on the left side and Rodrigo Mora who were causing all sorts of problems for Boca´s defenders. The warning signs were evident for Boca when Mora missed two good chances but he made no mistake with the third. Unmarked in the centre he headed past a helpless Orion from Vangioni precise cross.
Boca didn’t react to the goal and with 8 minutes remaining Mora scored his second to put the game beyond doubt.
Obviously with the game being a ‘friendly’ Boca can take consolation that there was nothing riding on the game other than the jokes that they will have to endure from River fans. They will not have to wait long for revenge either as the second of these summer games is on Tuesday 29th in Mendoza before the final game on Saturday 2nd February in Cordoba. They may just be friendlies but Boca will not want to start the new season with 3 defeats at the hands of the enemy.
