Velez lose Copa Libertadores opener

Velez Sarsfield suffered a set back in their attempts to be crowned champions of South America losing their opening game of the Copa Libertadores in Ecuador to Emelec. New signing, Fernando Gago was handed a debut in central midfield in a strong Velez side but that could not stop them starting this years championship with defeat. The only goal of the game was an own goal by striker Facundo Ferreyra, and then to add insult to injury Velez defender, Fernando Tobio was sent off. This is by no means critical to Velez’s chances but they can’t afford a slip up against Iquique of Chile next week, ahead of the potentially tricky ties with Uruguayan giants, Penarol.
Tomorrow sees Boca start their Libertadores campaign against Toluca of Mexico and then on Thursday it is the turn of Arsenal who travel to Bolivia to play The Strongest.
