Libertadores: Newell’s suffer defeat again

Newell’s Old Boys have a difficult task if they are to qualify for the next stage of the Copa Libertadores after losing 2 – 1 in Rosario to Universidad de Chile. La U went ahead after just 3 minutes when a cross from the left found Guillermo Marino and he expertly finished. 10 minutes later it was two when Sebastian Ubilla got the wrong side of Newell’s defender, Milton Casco and was clumsily brought down in the box. Casco escaped with a yellow but Charles Aranguis made no mistake with the resulting penalty. On the stroke of halftime Newell’s pulled one back, a wonderful freekick by, who else, Ignacio Scocco. Newell’s were unable to get an equiliser in the second half but were reduced to 10 men when veteran, Gabriel Heinze was shown a red card. 5 minutes later both teams were a man down when Jose Rojas was given a second booking but La U were able to hold on. The result leaves Newell’s bottom of Group 7 on 3 points ahead of next week’s game in Chile.
