Tigre beat Velez in Liniers

Two of Argentina’s representatives in this year’s Copa Libertadores went head to head in Liniers, both coming off bad results in previous weeks. Tigre had just lost to relegation threatened Independiente and Velez were 7 games without a win but it was to be Tigre that broke that cycle and stretched Velez’s run one game more. Kevin Itabel gave the visitors an early lead with a volley from 20 yards which bounced awkwardly into the corner and, despite Federico Insua levelling matters with a penalty, the game was won just after half time when Leandro Leguizamon managed to bundle his way past a host of Velez defenders before planting his shot firmly beyond Sebastian Sosa. Tigre were made to work hard for their victory after seeing Diego Ferreira sent off with over 10 minutes to go and really would have been pegged back but for Jonathan Copete’s awful miss from three yards out. If there was a bloopers compilation come the end of the season this would be on there! The only good news for Velez was the return of last season’s top scorer Facundo ‘Chucky’ Ferreyra and both sides can now look ahead to their Copa Libertadores second legs.
