The title race shows no signs of opening up as all four challengers in action yesterday failed to take 3 points and left San Lorenzo at the summit. Newell’s Old Boys and Arsenal finished 1-1 in Rosario leaving them both behind El Ciclon. Boca Juniors slumped to a 2-0 defeat in La Bombonera to relegation strugglers, All Boys. Juan Roman Riquelme limped off early and despite Fernando Gago returning from injury as a substitute he could not prevent, what could be a crucial loss. Lanus also failed to capitalise on the those around them dropping points as they drew 0-0 with Gimnasia. Finally, River Plate’s woeful form continued as they lost in Avellaneda to Racing, thanks to Bruno Zuculini’s early goal. Clueless and without any attacking threat River failed to score again and are now 10 without a win, and to make matters worse, Eder Alvarez Balanta was shown another red card late on. WATCH ALL THE ACTION….
LANUS 0 – 0 GIMNASIA
Lanus have looked formidable of late and despite creating the better chances they were unable to break down Gimnasia, who were able to cling on for a very good away point.
BOCA JUNIORS 0 – 2 ALL BOYS
Boca in La Bombonera with the title on the line against a side who have just lost their manager, not managed an away win all season and are in dire relegation trouble seemed like an obvious home win. However, when Riquelme went off injured after 15 minutes Boca lost any scrap of creativity and instead succumbed to Robert Battion’s header and Mauro Matos’ penalty. Not a bad start to Ricardo Rodriguez’s tenure as All Boys manager but could spell the end of Boca’s title challenge.
NEWELL’S OLD BOYS 1 – 1 ARSENAL
Newell’s looked dead certs at one stage to claim back-to-back titles but now 6 matches without a win has seen them throw away the initiative. Martin Caceres gave them the lead yesterday but Mariano Echeverría headed Arsenal level to share the points.
RACING CLUB 1 – 0 RIVER PLATE
River produced an utterly dreadful performance in which they were unable to create even a sniff of a goal and so Bruno Zuculini’s 13th minute header was enough to give Racing the win.
