Garay all set for big money Zenit move

Zenit’s website appears to have jumped the gun a little

Argentina’s first-choice centre back, Ezequiel Garay looks set to finalise a €20 million move to Zenit Saint Petersburg as the Russian League runner-ups have already announced the player on their website. Following a hugely successful season with Benfica a transfer was always on the cards and Manchester United had been strongly linked until recently. However, it seems Zenit have won the race as Garay’s representative has admitted that an agreement has been reached even though it remains unsigned.

Rafael Bray, Garay’s representive suggested that a deal is imminent and could be completed very soon despite the players inclusion in Argentina’s World Cup Squad.

“For our part, the agreement with Zenit is complete. Since January we have held talks and we have reached an agreement to close a contract.”

Bray added, “There is nothing signed, but there is already an agreement. What we know is that there is a great chance that the deal is done. Zenit and Benfica have been talking, so we expect that the transfer is completed. I do not know if tomorrow or the day after tomorrow, but in the coming days.”

Benfica already have their replacement in young Argentine defender, Lisandro Lopez who has been out on loan with Getafe since Benfica signed him from Arsenal.

Perhaps with the changes at Old Trafford recently, Manchester United were no longer interested in Garay but after such impressive form at Benfica it is a bit of a shame that his next move would be to Russia. Although I am sure Bray and Garay’s bank manager would beg to differ.
