Sergio Agüero limped out of Argentina’s victory over Nigeria yesterday and now the medical team have confirmed that the Manchester City striker has sufferered an edema in his left thigh. The discomfort felt by Agüero was this fluid but he will undergo further scans to see if there is a muscle tear. He has been ruled out for Tuesday’s last 16 tie with Switzerland and Argentina now wait to see if he will be fit to play any further part.
Ezequiel Lavezzi showed why he is a more than able replacement for Agüero and allows Alejandro Sabella to still play the recognised 4-3-3 formation but to lose a player of Kun’s ability for the remainder of the tournament would be a blow.
Agüero has not looked at the peak of his powers in the opening three matches but when on form and given his excellent relation with Lionel Messi he would always be a huge asset to have available.
Lavezzi will almost certainly take his place on Tuesday but there is also the option of shifting to a 4-4-2 with Messi alongside Higuain up front and Maxi Rodriguez slotting into the right side of midfield.
