The Mexican edition of Forbes magazine has compiled a list of the 30 most valuable clubs in the Americas and unsurprisingly Argentine clubs do not feature too prominently. Only Boca Juniors, River Plate, San Lorenzo and Independiente make the list as Brazilian and Mexican clubs dominate the 30.

According to the ranking, the three criterion are the value of the stadium, as long as this belongs to the club, the value of the playing squad and the value of the trademark or brand of the club.

To give some point of comparison, Real Madrid were named the most valuable in the world at an estimated $3.44 billion and while Corinthians, were comfortably listed as number one in the Americas, they were the only club side to have a value in excess of $500 million ($579.9 million).

Five of the top ten were made of Brazilian sides with the remainder coming from Mexico and the USA leaving Argentina’s highest ranked side as Boca Juniors in 14th position.

River Plate come in a little behind and San Lorenzo and Independiente also make it into the list but it comes as no surprise to see Argentine clubs absent. As the nation’s economy weakens, the clubs find it more difficult to survive and coupled with the decrease in big money transfers from overseas, even the giants of Boca and River operate on a loss from month to month.
