No relegation and the title deciders being played next weekend mean that it is a bizarre final round of fixtures with more or less nothing to play for except perhaps in La Plata, where Estudiantes still have the prospect of either Copa Libertadores or Copa Sudamericana qualification. They will certainly play in one or the other depending on the outcome of the ludicrous Vélez and Boca playoff match in January.
On Friday evening, Estudiantes defeated Tigre 4-2 in a thoroughly entertaining match. Diego Vera’s acrobatic volley gave the home side the lead after just 5 minutes only to see a defensive slip allow Sebastián Rincon to level the match. Guido Carrillo added two after the break and although Kevin Itabel pulled one back, Jonathan Schunke wrapped up the victory with an 84th minute header.
Later in Liniers, San Lorenzo ended their domestic season with a 2-0 win over Vélez Sarsfield before Edgardo Bauza’s side jet off to Morocco for the World Club Cup. A rather drab encounter was finally given a goal courtesy of youngster, Héctor Villalba in the 84th minute and shortly after the points were ensured when a calamitous own goal that ricocheted off Sebastián Dominguez into his own net gave El Ciclón victory.
