Vélez Sarsfield are reportedly negotiating with Premier League side, Newcastle in an attempt to bring Jonás Gutiérrez back to the club he began his career.
The former Argentina midfielder has returned to Newcastle following his battle against testicular cancer and in his efforts to regain match fitness has been representing Newcastle’s under-21 side. The 31-year-old is now nearing full fitness but it would still appear that his future at the Magpies is over. Prior to his cancer treatment he had been told that he could find a new club and although he remains a popular figure on Tyneside his time at the club looks set to end.
Argentine sports network, TyC are reporting that Vélez are discussing a proposed transfer in January so that Gutiérrez was with the squad ahead of the start of the Argentine season in February. With only six months on his current deal any fee would be nominal and so it would perhaps only come down to agreeing with the player.
It remains to be seen if Gutiérrez is prepared to return to Argentina but Vélez would represent the most likely destination. As a product of their academy, El Galgo went on to represent the club 99 times and won the Clausura in 2005 before moving to Mallorca.
