Messi struck his record breaking 24th La Liga hat-trick in the 6-1 demolition of Rayo Vallecano, adding all three goals in a twelve minute spell of the second half. The goals not only put him ahead of Cristiano Ronaldo for hat-tricks but also saw Messi draw level with the Real Madrid striker on 30 goals in 2014/15.
Luis Suarez opened the scoring in the first half and after Gerard Pique added a second, Messi took over. The first was a retaken penalty after the initial effort was saved, and seven minutes later he tapped in his second. For the simplicity of this opening goals, the third was another piece of magic, as Messi finished off a nice passing move, bursting between two defenders and rounding the keeper to roll the ball in.
The visitors pulled a goal back before Messi turned provider and released Suarez for his second of the match.
