Estudiantes emphatically beat Gimnasia in the clásico platense (VIDEO)

The summer clásico platense was marred by a pitch battle resulting in several lengthy suspensions and although there was no repeat of that on the pitch, Estudiantes delivered a one-sided beat down of their fierce rivals inside the Estadio Único. Gimnasia made the short journey across town following their draw with San Lorenzo last weekend but can have few complaints about defeat on Sunday.

The home side took the lead after just 10 minutes when Augusto Solari drove down the right and his low cross found a way through to Gastón Fernández, who tapped the ball past Enrique Bologna.

El Pincha were good value for their lead and before the hour mark, they doubled their lead. Bologna failed to hold Facundo Sánchez’s shot and substitute Carlos Auzqui followed it in. Shortly after, another marauding run forward by Sánchez drew a reckless challenge from Mauricio Romero and it allowed Fernández to cooly chip in from the penalty spot.

The match itself may have avoided any violence but a scuffle did break out in one of the director’s boxes where members of the Gimnasia board had insulted the players and angered some of the players not in Pedro Troglio’s matchday squad.

Winning the clásico is always important and Estudiantes recent run is mightily impressive but the three points also took Nelson Vivas’ side up to third in the table, trailing Defensa y Justicia only on goal difference and behind Lanús by three points.

Estudiantes  3 – 0  Gimnasia
