Godoy Cruz’s title challenge must now be taken very seriously after El Tomba came from behind to ease past Vélez Sarsfield in Liniers and go two points clear at the top of Zone One. Talented youngster Maxi Romero powerfully volleyed the home side into a half time lead but a powerful performance after the break saw the visitors run away with it. Jaime Ayoví equalised after following in Facundo Silva’s shot which had come back off the crossbar and moments later, Silva again struck the framework again only for Santiago García to this time tuck away the rebound. Javier Correa struck an excellent third before Ayoví tapped in his second of the game.

Independiente missed the chance to close the gap on Godoy Cruz after a goalless draw against Sarmiento in Junín. Another lacklustre performance by Mauricio Pellegrino’s side was undeserving of anything more and it will be the home side who will feel they did enough to snatch all three points. Caruso Lombardi is yet to celebrate victory as Sarmiento boss but has certainly made El Verde tougher to beat while El Rojo are now five points off the leaders of Zone One.

In the weekend’s ‘clásico’ Arsenal celebrated a fifth league win of the season over Defensa y Justicia to climb to third in the table. Keeping another clean sheet proved vital as the match was decided over an early goalkeeping error by Pablo Santillo allowing Mariano Barbieri to score the winner. El Halcón’s form has certainly taken a dive and this third consecutive defeat has seen them drop to eighth in the table.

Defensa y Justicia  0 – 1  Arsenal de Sarandí

Vélez Sarsfield  1 – 4  Godoy Cruz

Sarmiento  0 – 0  Independiente
