Two goals within seconds of kickoff and the full time whistle gave Arsenal a victory over River Plate in their final game of the Transición and ended what has been a thoroughly disappointing 2016 for Marcelo Gallardo’s side. Mariano Barbieri sent a looping volley over Augusto Batalla’s head into the net after only 25 seconds and although River improved after the break and equalised through Lucas Alario’s penalty, the home side stole all the points. Second half substitute Agustín Vuletich headed in a late winner and now Gallardo must regroup and rebuild the River side, that is now a shadow of the one that lifted the Copa Libertadores just over a year ago.
In Victoria, Tigre reached the 20-point mark that manager Pedro Troglio set when he took over by defeating Aldosivi 2-0. El Tiburón may feel like the result was a little harsh but ultimately one side took their chances and that was enough. Federico González headed in the first in first half stoppage time and in the 85th minute the impressive Lucas Janson nodded in a second.
