It took a little bit of luck but Argentina under-20s booked their place in the semi final of the L’Alcúdia International Football Tournament on Saturday afternoon thanks to a hard fought 1-0 win over Costa Rica in Valencia.
San Lorenzo’s Emiliano Purita volleyed the only goal of the game shortly before half time and it proved to be enough for Los Pibes to take top spot in Group B.
Pablo Argañaraz struck the woodwork during the second half when Argentina were on top but the host of missed chances almost came back to haunt the Albiceleste when Costa Rica were awarded a penalty with ten minutes remaining.
Jonathan Martínez missed from the spot and Los Ticos, who may yet qualify if they can beat Qatar in the final group game, saw the chances of a draw slip away.
Argentina ended the game with nine after Lanús pair Enzo Ortíz and Matías Nani were both shown second yellow cards but Los Pibes held on for the invaluable three points.
Group A is still wide open so Argentina’s semi-final opponents is still unknown – Spain, Venezuela and the United States are all possibilities ahead of their final matches.
