Thankfully there was no repeat of the worrying scenes that affected last weekend’s clásico but it didn’t mean that matters on the pitch were any more exciting as Newell’s Old Boys and Rosario Central played out another goalless draw only this time to be separated by penalty kicks.
Both sides fielded largely reserve sides and the result was two somewhat impotent attacks that failed to open too many chances of real note.
Newell’s keeper Ezequiel Unsain returned to action after suffering a broken jaw last season and showed why he is considered one of the top young goalkeepers in Argentina with the few saves he was forced to make but other than Brian Rivero’s late sending off there was little to discuss.
With the scoreline the same than it was one week ago in the Estadio Marcelo Bielsa the match went to penalties.
Malcom Pilone missed for Central and it left Mauricio Tévez to convert the winning spotkick and send Newell’s through to the Copa Santa Fe semi-final.
Rosario Central 0 – 0 Newell’s Old Boys (Pens 3-5)
